ABOUT THE 2018 SUMMIT
The theme of this year’s LA84 Foundation Summit is: “Athlete Activism + Social Justice: Taking Action for Our Youth.” In keynotes, panel discussions and power talks, speakers from across the country will discuss topics such as the impact athlete activists can have, P.E. as a social justice issue, how to ensure sports are safe for kids, and much more.
Featured speakers include Sal Masekela (emcee), Tony Dungy, Mike Tirico, Ibtihaj Muhammad, Greg Louganis, Jordyn Wieber, Metta World Peace, Cari Champion, Chris Borland, and LA84 Foundation President & CEO Renata Simril. Additional speakers will be announced during the coming weeks.
“There is a long and storied tradition of athlete activists working to benefit young people,” said Renata Simril, President & CEO of the LA84 Foundation. “At our Summit, generations of change makers will come together to talk about what works, and how to build a better future for all our kids.”
The theme of the summit also commemorates the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. Fifty years ago, this October, three men stood in solidarity on a medal stand at the 1968 Olympic Games. This wasn’t the first time in history that athletics and activism intertwined – but the silent protest, heard around the world, by Dr. John Carlos, Tommie Smith and Peter Norman is among the most iconic, enduring, and galvanizing. The stand for justice that those three sprinters made that famous day has turned into a multigenerational marathon of change.
